Boost Your Practice: Lessons from Performance-Based Financing in the DRC

Boost Your Practice: Lessons from Performance-Based Financing in the DRC

The study titled "What Happens When Donors Pull Out? Examining Differences in Motivation Between Health Workers Who Recently Had Performance-Based Financing (PBF) Withdrawn With Workers Who Never Received PBF in the Democratic Republic of Congo" provides valuable insights into the effects of withdrawing donor-funded PBF on health worker motivation. This research is crucial for practitioners who aim to enhance their skills and improve healthcare delivery.

The Study's Findings

The research conducted in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) involved a cross-sectional study comparing health workers who had experienced the withdrawal of donor-funded PBF with those who had never received such incentives. The findings revealed that workers from facilities where PBF was withdrawn scored significantly lower on most dimensions of motivation compared to those who had never received PBF. The removal of PBF led to a reduction in income, causing staff exodus and negatively impacting relationships with the local community.

Key Takeaways for Practitioners

The Role of Further Research

This study underscores the need for further research on sustainable incentive models that balance financial and non-financial motivators. Practitioners are encouraged to explore additional studies and data to inform their strategies for maintaining high levels of motivation among healthcare workers.
