Why digital literacy has become a “must-have” skill in K–12

Creation can be a podcast, infographic, website, video, app prototype, or interactive presentation. The key is that students make intentional choices, not just assemble content.
DL.4: Exercise digital citizenship for constructive and responsible social action
Digital citizenship is not only about safety rules. It includes ethics, inclusion, and well-being—areas schools increasingly recognize as essential to student success.
- Digital ethics and responsibility: understanding legal/ethical norms (privacy, plagiarism, licensing) and consequences of violating them.
- Digital citizenship and social inclusion: engaging responsibly across cultures and communities, using digital tools to support inclusion and civic participation.
- Digital well-being and balance: managing technology’s impact on health, productivity, and lifestyle; balancing curiosity with skepticism about new tools.
