Are you a social worker in New Jersey looking to understand the intricacies of clinical supervision? Whether you're an LSW aiming for your LCSW or seeking the right supervisor, navigating these requirements can be complex. In this blog, we break down key points about clinical supervision, providing clarity and ease.
Who Can Supervise Me?
Clinical supervision must be provided by an LCSW with at least three years of experience and 20 hours of post-graduate coursework related to supervision. It’s crucial to verify your supervisor's credentials before starting, as unqualified supervision can invalidate your hours.
How Often Do I Have to Meet with My Supervisor?
Supervision must include at least one hour of face-to-face individual or group sessions per week. Groups can consist of up to four LSWs working towards their LCSW.
Can I Meet with My Supervisor Using Skype or Other Videoconferencing Systems?
Supervisors can use HIPAA-compliant video conferencing for up to half of the total supervision hours. Note that Skype and Facetime are not HIPAA compliant. Always verify the compliance of your chosen platform.
Can I See Private Clients While Under Supervision for My LCSW?
No, only LCSWs may engage in independent practice. LSWs under supervision can provide clinical social work services within an agency or a practice owned by a licensed healthcare professional, provided they meet all regulatory requirements.
What If There Is No Qualified Supervisor Where I Work?
You can pay for outside supervision, but there are additional steps to comply with regulations:
- Ensure the supervisor has an LCSW with the required experience and education.
- Obtain written permission from your employer for off-premises supervision.
- Inform clients about your supervised status and obtain their written consent for sharing documents with your supervisor.
- The supervisor must provide quarterly progress reports to both you and your employer.
Continuing Education Requirements
When renewing your license, you must confirm completion of the necessary continuing education hours:
- CSW: 20 hours (5 in ethics, 3 in social and cultural competence, 1 in opioid addiction).
- LSW: 30 hours (5 in ethics, 3 in social and cultural competence, 1 in opioid addiction).
- LCSW: 40 hours (5 in ethics, 3 in social and cultural competence, 1 in opioid addiction, 20 in clinical practice).
Excess hours can be carried over to the next cycle: 4 for CSWs, 6 for LSWs, and 8 for LCSWs.
