Welcome to the World of MIYHS!
Have you ever wondered how we gather vital information about the health and wellbeing of young people in Maine? Meet the Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey (MIYHS), a key player in this field since 2009. Conducted every two years, MIYHS collaborates with the Maine CDC and DOE to provide schools and communities with essential data on students’ health behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes. This information helps state and local partners offer targeted support to school districts, addressing health challenges faced by young people today.
How Does MIYHS Work?
Participation in MIYHS is entirely voluntary. Schools in Maine are encouraged to administer the survey, but it is ultimately up to families and students to decide whether to participate. The survey is conducted in 5th/6th grades, middle school, and high school, with more than 75% of students in participating schools choosing to take part.
MIYHS is an Institutional Research Board (IRB) approved survey, ensuring ethical standards are met. Schools notify families weeks before the survey is administered, providing an opportunity for parents to opt their child out if they choose. Importantly, the survey is completely anonymous, with no names collected and no individual data tracked.
Why Are Sensitive Topics Included?
MIYHS covers a wide range of health behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs, including potentially sensitive topics like youth depression and substance use. These questions reflect community concerns, and research shows that asking about these experiences does not increase risky behaviors. In fact, since the survey began, reported behaviors such as cigarette smoking, alcohol use, and sexual activity have decreased.
Experts from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and child/adolescent health specialists carefully review each question to ensure age-appropriate language. Different versions of the survey are developed for 5th/6th graders, middle schoolers, and high school students, reflecting their unique experiences and understanding.
How Is MIYHS Data Used?
MIYHS data is invaluable for a wide range of health and education partners. It provides insights into what Maine children are experiencing, particularly around issues like drug/alcohol use, depression, and suicide/self-harm. The data helps us understand which programs are effective, what interventions are needed, and what kinds of support are necessary for youth across the state.
- MIYHS data has helped Maine’s Drug Free Communities coalitions track their impact on preventing substance use among students.
- It has highlighted the need for increased access to mental health services through partnerships between schools and community behavioral health agencies.
- MIYHS data has supported Maine CDC, Maine DOE, local health coalitions, and school districts in securing grants for a wide range of youth health initiatives.
The MIYHS team at Maine CDC and DOE greatly appreciates the support of Maine schools, families, and students. Your participation in this valuable resource is essential for supporting the health of young people across our state.
