Empowering Change: Harnessing Research for Better Palliative Care Outcomes

In the realm of palliative care, the power of research cannot be overstated. As healthcare professionals, especially those involved in online therapy services like TinyEYE, it's crucial to understand the role research plays in shaping effective care strategies. A recent study titled Research attitudes, practice and literacy among Kenyan palliative care healthcare professionals: an observational, cross-sectional online survey sheds light on the attitudes, practices, and literacy of healthcare professionals in Kenya regarding palliative care research. This study offers valuable insights that can be leveraged to improve skills and outcomes in the field.

Key Findings from the Research

The study surveyed 93 Kenyan palliative care professionals, revealing a strong consensus on the importance of research in their professional work. A remarkable 91.21% of respondents reported having the skills to conduct research, and 91.30% expressed a desire to engage in research within their clinical practice. These findings highlight a fertile ground for fostering a research-driven culture among palliative care professionals.

However, the study also identified challenges. Over two-fifths of respondents rated their research literacy as 'none' or 'beginner', indicating a need for enhanced educational initiatives. Additionally, barriers such as lack of time and funding were cited as significant obstacles to engaging in research activities.

Strategies for Enhancing Research Engagement

For practitioners aiming to improve their skills and outcomes through research, the following strategies are recommended:

Encouraging Further Research

The study underscores the importance of ongoing research to bridge the gap between evidence and practice. For practitioners, engaging in research not only enhances personal skills but also contributes to the global agenda of improving palliative care services. By participating in research, healthcare professionals can help shape policies and practices that better meet the needs of patients and their families.
