Empowering Voices: The Evolution of the Elks & Royal Purple Fund for Children

Empowering Voices: The Evolution of the Elks & Royal Purple Fund for Children

Since its inception in 1956, the Elks & Royal Purple Fund for Children has embarked on a noble mission to assist children who, without the right support, might not have a voice in the world. This charity has stood the test of time, evolving with the changing needs of society and technology, to support children with hearing and speech disorders across Canada.

The journey began with the Elks Purple Cross Fund, aiming to help "those who cannot speak for themselves." This ethos paved the way for the innovative "Deaf Detection & Development Program" in 1968, marking the start of a focused effort to detect hearing impairments early on. The program's slogan, "Early Detection of Hearing Loss — Everyone's Responsibility!" highlighted the community's role in safeguarding children's futures.

Over the years, the Fund has not only supported the detection of hearing loss but has also played a crucial role in the treatment and development of children facing these challenges. Through the sponsorship of international conferences, development of diagnostic procedures, and funding of ongoing programs and clinics, the Fund has been a beacon of hope and progress.

The recognition of their efforts by prestigious organizations like the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists & Audiologists and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association underscores the significant impact of the Fund's work. The awards for Distinguished Service are a testament to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved.

In 2013, the introduction of the butterfly as the symbol for transformed lives through the power of hearing and communication marked a new chapter in the Fund's journey. This symbol represents the metamorphosis of countless children who, with the right support, learn to hear and communicate effectively.

The partnership with Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC) in 2013 further strengthened the Fund's mission. Together, they advocate for Early Hearing Detection & Intervention Programs, ensuring that newborns in Canada are screened at birth and receive the necessary early intervention and services.

Today, the Elks & Royal Purple Fund for Children continues to provide financial assistance for medical needs, including hearing and speech disorders, medical travel, and appointments with specialists for children under the age of 19. The Fund also supports provincial programs like the BC Family Hearing Resource Center, ISTAR, SPARC, and the Central Speech & Hearing Clinic, all dedicated to supporting children with hearing loss and speech disorders.

The VOICE Family Camp is another initiative supported by the Fund, offering families of children with hearing loss a chance to connect, share experiences, and build lifelong friendships.

As we look back on the journey of the Elks & Royal Purple Fund for Children, it's clear that the mission to help "those who cannot speak for themselves" has grown into a nationwide movement. By supporting early detection, intervention, and rehabilitation, the Fund has empowered countless children to find their voices and lead fulfilling lives.
