Road traffic crashes (RTCs) are a significant public health issue worldwide, particularly in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Iran, where RTCs rank second in terms of mortality. A recent study titled "Setting research priorities to achieve long-term national road safety goals in Iran" sheds light on the importance of prioritizing research questions (RQs) to enhance road safety and achieve long-term goals.
The study, which adapted the Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative (CHNRI) method, engaged 25 prominent Iranian academic leaders, research funders, and policymakers to generate and prioritize RQs. These experts scored the proposed questions based on criteria such as feasibility, impact on health, impact on the economy, capacity building, and equity. This systematic approach resulted in the identification of the top 20 road traffic safety priorities for Iran.
The majority of these prioritized RQs focused on "road safety management" and "road and infrastructure," indicating a need for institutional accountability, data-driven countermeasures, and evidence-based policymaking. The study highlights the critical importance of addressing these RQs to make the most efficient use of resources and advance towards international road safety goals.
Key Findings and Recommendations for Practitioners
1. Road Safety Management
The study identified "road safety management" as a crucial area for research. Practitioners can improve their skills by focusing on:
- Institutional accountability
- Data-driven countermeasures
- Evidence-based policymaking
- Coordination and promotion of road safety initiatives
2. Road and Infrastructure
Research in this area will help understand the impact of safer road networks and infrastructure on reducing RTCs. Practitioners should:
- Advocate for the supervision and funding of research by Iran's Road Safety Commission
- Focus on inner and outer city road networks
3. Road User Behavior
Although fewer RQs were related to road user behavior, it remains a significant area for reducing RTCs. Practitioners can:
- Develop public policies promoting safe behaviors
- Implement strategies to modify risky behaviors
4. Safer Vehicles
Vehicle safety is a contentious issue in Iran due to restrictions on automobile imports and the lack of comprehensive safety monitoring systems. Practitioners should:
- Focus on advancing vehicle safety technologies
- Promote the implementation of safety standards
5. Post-Crash Care
Improving the quality of medical services for RTC victims is essential. Practitioners can:
- Enhance trauma care timeliness and quality
- Develop comprehensive emergency medical services
Encouraging Further Research
The study emphasizes the importance of prioritizing research questions to ensure effective use of limited resources and budgets. Practitioners are encouraged to delve deeper into the identified RQs and contribute to the body of knowledge that can significantly reduce the number of crashes, injuries, and deaths.
