For Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in Ohio, understanding the criminal records check process is crucial for obtaining initial licensure. The Ohio Revised Code Sections 4747.051 and 4753.061 mandate that all applicants submit fingerprints for a criminal records check conducted by the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Instructions for Ohio Residents
Applicants residing in Ohio must follow these steps to complete their criminal records check:
- Identify an Ohio county sheriff’s office or a WebCheck provider and contact that location for specific instructions.
- Request both a BCI and FBI criminal records check.
- Pay the required fees directly to the WebCheck (BCI & FBI) provider. Fees include BCI ($22), FBI ($25.25), and possibly a processing fee (e.g., $5-$40).
- Ensure the “Direct Copy” selection is made to submit the electronic records directly to the Ohio Speech and Hearing Professionals Board.
- Select the appropriate reason code: “Ohio Speech and Hearing Professionals Board License Applicant - R.C. 4747.051” for hearing aid dealers or fitters license, or “Ohio Speech and Hearing Professionals Board License Applicant - R.C. 4753.061” for audiology, speech-language pathology, conditional speech-language pathology, audiology aide, or speech-language pathology aide license.
Note that some agencies have restricted hours and may require an appointment. Verify if any additional materials, such as a valid photo ID, are needed.
Instructions for Out-of-State Residents
Out-of-state applicants residing within a one-hour drive of Ohio are encouraged to follow the same WebCheck instructions as Ohio residents. If residing more than seventy-five miles from Ohio or unable to comply with the in-person WebCheck protocol, follow these steps:
- Contact the licensure board in writing by email at Board@shp.ohio.gov or by fax at (614) 995-2286 to request the appropriate forms (paper fingerprint cards and instructions).
- Have your fingerprints taken at a local law enforcement agency in your community outside Ohio.
- Send the paper fingerprint cards and fee directly to BCI for processing.
Keep in mind that this paper fingerprint protocol will take additional time to process.
Processing Time
BCI has up to 30 days to process background check results. Typically, results for “no hit” reports are received within 7 to 10 business days. Reports with a legal history may take longer as BCI verifies adverse data.
