Are you looking to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Utah? Whether you're a Utah resident or moving from out-of-state, navigating the licensing process can seem daunting. But don't worry, we're here to help you through it! In this blog, we'll break down the key requirements for both Utah applicants and out-of-state applicants.
For Utah Applicants
If you're applying for an LCSW license in Utah, you'll need to meet the following requirements:
- Passed the ASWB Clinical Exam (which you may have already done to receive your Utah CSW license).
- Completed 3,000 hours of experience while licensed as a Utah CSW. Note that hours obtained as a UT CSW Intern do NOT count.
- Each of your supervisors must complete the Verification of Experience form. If you've had more than one supervisor, EACH supervisor must complete a form.
For Out-of-State Applicants Applying by Endorsement
If you're an out-of-state applicant looking to apply by endorsement, here are the key points:
- Ensure you have been licensed for at least one year as a licensed clinical social worker in a state, territory, or district of the United States deemed equivalent to Utah and are in good standing.
- If you do not qualify for the pathway outlined above but have been engaged in lawful practice for not less than 4,000 hours, of which at least 1,000 hours are in mental health therapy, you may still apply.
To meet the requirements, you'll need:
- Official verification of license from one or more states where you are currently licensed as an LCSW (or equivalent). This is NOT a copy of your license.
- Primary Source verification verifying name, license title, license issue date, license expiration date, and if the license is in GOOD standing.
- Verifications must cover the time period used to qualify for endorsement.
- Official verification of passing the ASWB Exam. This may be included on the official verification above or from ASWB directly.
- Verification of Active Practice as an LCSW (or equivalent) verifying 4,000 hours.
- If you have more than one place of employment to count hours, you must have each employer complete a separate form, and the hours from all forms must total 4,000.
- If you are in private practice, have a colleague or another professional complete the form.
- Only include hours and dates from when you were licensed and able to practice independently. Do NOT include dates and hours used to accrue supervision.
For Out-of-State Applicants Not Applying by Endorsement
If you do not qualify for licensure by endorsement, you can still apply by meeting the following requirements:
- Passed the ASWB Clinical Exam (Submit Official Verification).
- Master’s Degree in Social Work.
- Completed 3,000 hours of experience under an LCSW ONLY while licensed as a CSW (or equivalent). Hours not completed under an LCSW are NOT considered for UT licensure.
- Each supervisor must complete a form.
- Official verification of license from one or more states where you are currently licensed. This is NOT a copy of your license. Primary Source verification verifying name, license title, license issue date, license expiration date, and if the license is in GOOD standing.
- Official verification of license from your supervisor for the state where experience hours were completed. This is NOT a copy of their license. Primary Source verification verifying name, license title, license issue date, license expiration date, and if the license is in GOOD standing.
