Becoming a registered Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) in Ontario can seem like a daunting process, especially if you’re coming from an international or non-accredited Canadian program. But don't worry! We've broken down the steps for you in a fun and easy-to-read format. Let's dive in!
Step 1: Read the Application Guide
Before you start your application, make sure to read the Application Guide for International and Non-Accredited Canadian Programs. This guide will provide you with all the essential information you need to get started.
Step 2a: Access the Registrant Portal
Head over to the Registrant Portal to begin your online application. This is your first official step towards becoming a registered SLP in Ontario.
Step 2b: Specific Steps for Non-Accredited Canadian Programs
If you’re a graduate of a Non-Accredited Canadian Program, you can enroll for the Canadian Entry To Practice (CETP) Exam through Speech Language and Audiology Canada (SAC)’s website. Here’s what you need to do:
- Complete your online application, including all required documents and fees, at least 10 weeks ahead of the exam date.
- CASLPO will review your application to confirm your eligibility to write the CETP Exam.
- CASLPO must provide your name to SAC’s Exam Manager at least three weeks before the exam date.
Step 2b: Specific Steps for International Programs
If you’re a graduate from an international program, your application must be assessed by CASLPO. Here’s what you need to do:
- Complete your online application, including all required documents and fees, at least 20 weeks ahead of the exam date.
- You can only begin your application after completing your professional master’s program in audiology or speech-language pathology.
Step 3: Application Receipt Confirmation
After submitting your application, check your email for a confirmation from the College. This email should arrive 15 days after they receive your application and will notify you of any outstanding documents.
Step 4a: Application Review
The review process for your application will begin once the College has received a complete application. This includes all required documents. Here’s what to expect:
- The review and assessment will take about 12 weeks.
- If eligible, you’ll receive CASLPO’s Registration Form via email.
- If there are deficiencies, CASLPO will inform you and provide the next steps.
Step 4b: For International Graduates Only
If you’re eligible for registration, you’ll be directed to SAC’s website to enroll in the CETP Exam. CASLPO will notify SAC of your eligibility.
Step 5: Final Registration
Once you’ve submitted a complete Registration Form and accompanying documents to CASLPO, you’ll receive an email confirmation within 10 days. Remember, you’re not considered registered until you receive written confirmation and a registration number from the College.
