How to Navigate Licensure for Occupational Therapists in Illinois: A Comprehensive Guide

How to Navigate Licensure for Occupational Therapists in Illinois: A Comprehensive Guide

For occupational therapists and certified occupational therapy assistants looking to practice in Illinois, understanding the licensure process is crucial. The Illinois Department of Professional Regulation (IDFPR) oversees this process, and it is important to be aware of all the requirements and deadlines.

Licensure Requirements

To practice as an occupational therapist (OT) or certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA) in Illinois, you must hold a valid license issued by the IDFPR. Licenses expire on December 31 of each odd-numbered year, and you must complete 24 contact hours of continuing education (CE) for each renewal period. One of these hours must be in ethics education, a requirement that began with the December 2017 renewal.

New Continuing Education Requirement

As of January 1, 2020, a new law mandates that all professionals who hold a license issued by the Division of Professional Regulation must complete a one-hour CE course in sexual harassment prevention training. This requirement is included within the existing 24-hour CE requirement and does not add to the total hours needed for renewal.

Key Points to Remember

Application Process for New Graduates

If you are a new graduate, your school can guide you through the application process. However, it is important to note that merely completing the application or being informed that your license is in the mail does not permit you to start practicing. You must have the actual license in your possession.

Role of the Illinois Occupational Therapy Association (ILOTA)

While the ILOTA does not handle licensure, it plays a significant role in lobbying and protecting the integrity of the OT license in Illinois. Active membership in the ILOTA is essential for supporting these efforts.
