How to Renew Your Speech-Language Pathology License in Texas: Key Insights

How to Renew Your Speech-Language Pathology License in Texas: Key Insights

Renewing your Speech-Language Pathology license in Texas can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be! Here's a simple guide to help you navigate the renewal process with ease.

Renewal Process

Licenses are eligible for renewal 60 days prior to expiration. TDLR encourages you to start the renewal process as early as possible to avoid any lapses in licensure due to incomplete application materials or other delays.

You will be notified of your license expiration at least 30 days before your license is scheduled to expire. The renewal notification will be sent to your address of record. Note that non-receipt of a license renewal notice from the Department does not exempt you from meeting license renewal requirements.

Upon your first renewal at TDLR, you will receive a new certificate and a new wallet card. All licenses are issued for 2 years, except for Intern licenses, which are valid for one year.

Fingerprinting

Some licensees will need to provide new fingerprints before their license can be renewed. You can search the database to determine if you need new fingerprints. Additionally, TDLR will send you an email 90 days before your license expires.

You will need your Agency Identifier (your unique TDLR Entity Number) to book your fingerprint appointment.

Application Forms

License renewal forms can be completed and submitted online using the online licensing system.

RENEW ONLINE

If you are unable to renew online, please email TDLR to request a paper renewal form.

Fee Schedule

New Human Trafficking Prevention Training Requirement

A human trafficking prevention training course, approved by the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), must be completed to renew your license.

For more information on the training requirement, please visit the Human Trafficking Prevention Training for Health Care Practitioners webpage.

Continuing Education Requirements

To renew and maintain continuous licensure, you must complete all continuing education requirements prior to the expiration of the license to avoid payment of a late renewal fee.

Please see the Continuing Education Requirements page for detailed information.

Renewal of Expired Licenses

There is no grace period for expired licenses. If your license has lapsed, you may not practice without a current license issued by the department.

Applicants with Criminal Convictions

On receipt of a renewal application, the department shall conduct a criminal background check.

Please see the Guidelines for License Applicants with Criminal Convictions, which describe the process by which TDLR determines whether a criminal conviction renders an applicant an unsuitable candidate for the license, or whether a conviction warrants revocation or suspension of a license previously granted.
