Understanding the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Occupational Therapy
For those seeking to practice occupational therapy in Kentucky, understanding the requirements and processes of the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Occupational Therapy (KBLOT) is essential. This guide provides an overview of key questions and answers from the KBLOT's Frequently Asked Questions document, helping prospective and current therapists navigate licensure, renewal, and more.
General Board Information
The best way to submit formal questions to the Board is through written communication, either by letter or email. Letters should be sent to the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Occupational Therapy, P.O. Box 1360, Frankfort, Kentucky 40602. Emails can be directed to OT@KY.GOV. It's important to submit items 10 business days before a scheduled Board meeting for them to be reviewed.
Forms can be downloaded from the Board's website, OT.KY.GOV, under "Forms & Documents." Board meetings occur on the second Thursday of each month, and participation can be virtual or in-person.
Getting Licensed
The average time to issue a license after application submission is 2-3 weeks. For those licensed in another state, applying for a reciprocal license involves submitting verifications from all states where a license was held, along with NBCOT certification. New applicants must provide official transcripts and NBCOT certification.
Temporary permits are available for those who haven't passed the NBCOT exam, requiring a Confirmation of Eligibility and a supervising therapist's agreement. Once the NBCOT exam is passed, full licensure is automatically issued if all documentation is complete.
Continuing Education and Renewal
License renewal in Kentucky requires completion of Continuing Competency Units (CCUs). The number of CCUs needed depends on how long the license has been held. All licenses must be renewed by October 31, regardless of the issue date. CCUs must be completed within the current licensure year.
Suicide training is required within six years of initial licensure and every six years thereafter. For reinstating an expired license, proof of completed CCUs is necessary, with requirements varying based on how long the license has been expired.
DPAM Certification
Practicing DPAMs in Kentucky requires meeting specific regulatory requirements. Previous DPAM courses can count towards certification if they were approved at the time of completion.
