Introduction

In New Mexico, becoming a licensed social worker involves meeting specific educational and experiential requirements. Licensure Requirements
To become a licensed social worker in New Mexico, candidates must:
- Hold a bachelor's or master's degree in social work from an accredited institution.
- Pass a board-approved exam.
- Score at least 70% on the Jurisprudence exam.
- Verify completion of New Mexico cultural requirements.
- For independent practice, complete 3,600 hours of supervised practice over two years.
A provisional license is valid for one year and cannot be extended beyond four months except under extenuating circumstances such as illness, family death, or military service.
Supervision & Experience Requirements
Independent licensure requires:
- 3,600 hours of postgraduate social work experience.
- A minimum of 90 hours of supervision within 60 months, with at least one hour of supervision for every 40 hours worked.
Supervisors must complete a verification form, which the licensee uploads with their online application. Each supervisor requires a separate form and must be board-approved for those pursuing LCSW or LISW licensure.
Exams & Approvals
All exam approvals are processed after a completed application is received. Candidates must:
- Maintain LMSW licensure before starting supervision.
- Upload verification of supervision before obtaining a provisional license or exam approval.

License Renewal & Updates

For name changes, legal documentation is required, and a request for a duplicate license must be submitted along with a $25.00 fee.
License Verification & Reciprocity
License verification is free via the license lookup tool. To obtain official license verification for another state, submit a written request with a $15.00 fee, including your license number and the receiving state's mailing address. The board will determine eligibility for Expedited Licensure or Reciprocity for those with an out-of-state license.
Continuing Education (CEUs)
To renew a license, 30 total CEUs are required, including:
- 6 CEUs in cultural competency.
- 20 board-approved CEUs.
- Up to 10 non-board-approved CEUs related to social work.
CEUs must be approved by organizations such as NASW, ASWB, NBCC, NM Counseling and Therapy Board, or the NM Psychology Board. To become a continuing education provider, apply through these organizations.
