Understanding Maryland's Social Work Licensure Requirements
In the state of Maryland, practicing as a social worker or even using the title requires licensure from the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners. This blog provides a comprehensive overview of the licensure process, ensuring that you have the knowledge needed to navigate the system effectively.
Licensure Types and Application Methods
Maryland offers three types of social work licenses:
- LBSW - Licensed Bachelor Social Worker (BSW)
- LMSW - Licensed Masters Social Worker (MSW)
- LCSW-C - Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical (MSW/LMSW with additional clinical experience)
Applications can be submitted online via two primary methods:
- Application by Examination
- Application by Endorsement
Additionally, there are options for reactivation, reinstatement, and re-licensure.
Clinical License Requirements
For those pursuing the LCSW-C, specific experience and supervision criteria must be met. Applicants need:
- An active LMSW license
- 12 academic credit hours in clinical coursework from an accredited program
- At least 3,000 hours of supervised clinical social work experience over a minimum of two years
- 100 hours of direct face-to-face supervision under a Board-approved LCSW-C supervisor
Experience obtained out-of-state must meet similar criteria, with supervision by a licensed clinical social worker.
Online Application and Renewal Process
Before starting your application, ensure you have:
- Internet access
- A valid email address
- Your social work licenses and Social Security number
- A Visa, MasterCard, or Discover for payment
For renewal, gather your continuing education certificates and be prepared to complete a criminal background check. The online system requires you to log in using your license number and the last four digits of your Social Security number.
Continuing Education and Supervision
Continuing education is crucial for maintaining your license. The requirements include:
- At least 20 Category I continuing education units (15 for LBSWs), with a total of at least 40 units (30 for LBSWs)
- At least three units in Ethics
- Three units in Supervision for Board Approved Supervisors
After reviewing and confirming your application details, proceed to payment. Ensure all information is accurate, as changes cannot be made post-submission.
