Across many schools, physical education (PE) still looks much like it did decades ago: short units, a “multi-activity” sports rotation, and instruction that can lean heavily on teacher-directed drills. Yet research and practitioner experience continue to flag a persistent challenge—especially in secondary grades—where students’ attitudes toward PE, motivation, and physical activity behaviors tend to decline over time.

What the Research Says So Far (and What We Still Need)
Research on PBL in PE is still limited, but early findings are promising. In one study focused on health-related fitness knowledge, students who learned through a PBL unit demonstrated higher knowledge gains than peers in a comparison model. Other work suggests PBL can increase student accountability, ownership, and responsibility—especially when projects require teamwork, reflection, and presentation.
That said, the field still needs more evidence on:

PBL is not a quick swap. It asks more of teachers upfront and can feel unfamiliar to students who are used to step-by-step direction. Common challenges include:
More planning time to design strong driving questions, milestones, and assessments
Group dynamics (including “freeloading” unless roles and accountability are explicit)
Student uncertainty early on, especially if they are new to self-directed inquiry
Balancing movement time with reflection, critique, and product development
These challenges are manageable when schools provide consistent structures: clear rubrics, defined team roles, regular check-ins, and explicit teaching of collaboration and communication skills.
