How to Renew a Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology License in Texas
Are you a Speech-Language Pathologist or Audiologist in Texas? If so, it's crucial to stay informed about the license renewal process to ensure your ability to continue practicing without any interruptions. In this blog, we'll walk you through the essential steps and requirements for renewing your license, so you can avoid common pitfalls and stay compliant.
Renewal Process
Your license is eligible for renewal 60 days before its expiration date. It's advisable to start the renewal process as early as possible to avoid any lapses due to incomplete applications or other delays. You will receive a notification at least 30 days before your license is scheduled to expire. Remember, not receiving a renewal notice does not exempt you from meeting renewal requirements.
Upon your first renewal with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), you will receive a new certificate and wallet card. Licenses are typically valid for two years, except for Intern licenses, which are valid for one year.
Fingerprinting
Some licensees may need to provide new fingerprints before their license can be renewed. TDLR will notify you 90 days before your license expires if this is required. You'll need your Agency Identifier (TDLR Entity Number) to schedule your fingerprint appointment. Check the database to determine if you need new fingerprints.
Application Forms
License renewal forms can be completed and submitted online through the TDLR's online licensing system. If you are unable to renew online, you can request a paper renewal form by emailing TDLR.
Fee Schedule
- Speech Language Pathologist/Audiologist: $100
- Intern in Speech/Audiology: $75
- Assistant in Speech/Audiology: $100
New Human Trafficking Prevention Training Requirement
To renew your license, you must complete a human trafficking prevention training course approved by the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). For more information on this requirement, visit the Human Trafficking Prevention Training for Health Care Practitioners webpage.
Continuing Education Requirements
All continuing education requirements must be completed before the expiration of your license to maintain continuous licensure and avoid late renewal fees. Visit the Continuing Education Requirements page for detailed information.
Renewal of Expired Licenses
There is no grace period for expired licenses. If your license has lapsed, you cannot practice without a current license. Here's what you need to know about renewing an expired license:
- If expired for 90 days or less, pay a renewal fee equal to 1.5 times the normal fee.
- If expired for more than 90 days but less than 18 months, pay a renewal fee equal to twice the normal fee.
- With executive director approval, if expired for 18 months but less than three years, pay a renewal fee equal to twice the normal fee.
Applicants with Criminal Convictions
Upon receiving a renewal application, TDLR will conduct a criminal background check. Refer to the Guidelines for License Applicants with Criminal Convictions to understand how TDLR determines the impact of a criminal conviction on your license status.
