Are you considering a career in Speech-Language Pathology in Michigan or are you already practicing and need to renew your license? Navigating the licensing process can be daunting, but don't worry! We're here to break down the essentials in an easy-to-read format.
Types of Speech-Language Pathology Licenses
Michigan offers two primary types of Speech-Language Pathology licenses:
- Educational Limited Temporary License: Ideal for those in their clinical fellowship year. This license is valid for one 12-month period and cannot be renewed.
- Full Speech-Language Pathology License: The standard license for practicing SLPs.
License Validity and Renewal
Your initial Speech-Language Pathology license is valid for 2 years, and all subsequent renewals will also be valid for 2 years. Renewal notifications are sent 90 days before your license expires. You can renew online via your MiPLUS account.
Continuing Education Requirements
To renew or relicense, you need to complete 20 Continuous Professional Development (CPD) credits, including at least 1 CPD credit in pain and symptom management. Only 15 CPDs can be completed through ASHA; the remaining 5 must be completed in other forms outlined in the administrative rules.
Educational Limited Temporary License Requirements
To obtain this license, you need to submit:
- Your application and fee
- Final official transcripts from your educational institution
- A Certificate of Appointment to Clinic Experience form completed by your supervisor
Note: You must be supervised while holding this license.
Continuing Education Tracking
You don't need to submit proof of your CE credits when renewing, but you must retain documentation for 4 years in case of an audit.
Human Trafficking and Implicit Bias Training
Starting with the 2018 renewal cycle, you must complete training in identifying victims of human trafficking. For implicit bias training, beginning June 1, 2022, you need 2 hours of training within the 5 years preceding your license issuance. For renewals, you need 1 hour of implicit bias training for each year of licensure.
