Understanding Speech/Language Pathology Licensure in Delaware
Embarking on a career as a Speech/Language Pathologist (SLP) in Delaware requires navigating the licensure process. Whether you are completing your Clinical Fellowship (CF) or seeking full licensure, understanding the steps involved is crucial. This guide provides a detailed overview of the licensure process, including requirements, application procedures, and renewal information.
Applying for Licensure
For those who need to complete their Clinical Fellowship for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), applying for a temporary license is the first step. More information on obtaining a temporary license can be found here.
Full licensure in Delaware can be achieved through:
- Certification: If you hold current CCC-SLP ASHA certification, even if you are licensed in another jurisdiction.
- Reciprocity: If you hold an active license in another jurisdiction and have completed your CF but do not have current CCC-SLP ASHA certification.
How to Apply for a License in DELPROS
All applications are processed through the online system DELPROS. To apply, you must first create a DELPROS user account. Visit the DELPROS homepage to register or log in. Remember, you have six months to complete your application once started, or you will need to restart the process.
Check your application status online using the "View Application Status" feature on your e-License dashboard.
Know Your Requirements and Collect Your Documents
Before applying, ensure you understand the requirements for the license you are pursuing. Gather all necessary documents for upload, such as transcripts and verifications. Specific forms may need to be mailed directly to the Board office, especially those requiring signatures or notary.
Requirements for All Applicants
Regardless of the type of license, all applicants must submit:
- State/Jurisdiction Licensure Verification from each state or jurisdiction where you hold or have held a license.
- A State of Delaware and Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal background check (CBC).
- Foreign credential evaluation if your education was completed outside the U.S. or a U.S. territory.
Additional Requirements for Certification and Reciprocity Applicants
For certification applicants, a copy of your current CCC-SLP ASHA certification card is required. Reciprocity applicants must submit additional documents, especially if their jurisdiction is not listed as having substantially similar standards to Delaware.
Information about Renewals
SLP licenses expire on July 31 of odd years. Renewal notices are sent via email, and it's essential to keep your contact information updated. Licenses must be renewed in DELPROS every two years, with proof of continuing education (CE) completion.
If your license expires, you have one year to file a late renewal application, but practicing is illegal until the license is renewed. After one year, you must reapply as a new applicant.
Inactive and Reactivating Licenses
Active licenses can be placed in inactive status if not practicing in Delaware. Reactivation requires proof of CE completion within the preceding 24 months.
Fees for License Applications
Application fees are processed through DELPROS. Fees include $175 for Audiologist, Hearing Aid Dispenser, and SLP licenses, and $65 for temporary licenses. Renewal fees vary and are notified at the time of renewal.
