Securing licensure as a social worker in Kansas involves several crucial steps. Whether you're aiming for a Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker (LBSW) or Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) designation, it's essential to understand the application process thoroughly. This guide will walk you through the necessary steps to ensure a smooth and successful application.
1. Timing Your Application
Applications can only be submitted within four months of receiving your degree. This timing ensures that your academic credentials are current and relevant.
2. Understanding Statutes and Regulations
Before you begin your application, it is vital to read all instructions and review the relevant statutes and regulations. These can be found on the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board (BSRB) website at www.ksbsrb.ks.gov.
3. Reporting Criminal Convictions
If you have any criminal convictions, you must report them as part of your application. Specifically, you need to disclose:
- Conviction of any felony
- Conviction of any misdemeanor crime against a person
These convictions require you to complete a Conviction Packet, which can be downloaded from the BSRB website. Your application will not be reviewed without this information and will require a determination from the full Board.
4. Providing an Email Address
An email address is mandatory as it is the primary method of communication for the Board. Ensure you update your email address with the Board office if it changes.
5. Application Fee
The application fee is $50.00 and is non-refundable. Instructions for payment can be found in Appendix A of the application form.
6. Submitting Your Transcript
An official transcript with your degree posted must be sent directly from the Registrar’s office to the BSRB. This can be done via mail or electronically. Ensure that your degree is posted on the transcript before it is sent.
7. For Students Near Graduation
If you are within four months of graduation, you must submit the Verification of Academic Requirements form. This form should be completed by your program director and returned to you in a sealed envelope with their signature or school stamp across the seal. Once your degree is conferred, you must submit an official transcript to the Board office.
8. Professional References
Three professional references are required:
- One from the on-site supervisor of your final field education program
- Two from licensed social workers at or above the intended level of licensure
Each reference should return the completed form to you in a sealed envelope with their signature across the seal.
9. Examination
After your application is reviewed and approved, you will receive an email regarding eligibility to sit for the examination, administered by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB). Examination information and registration can be found at www.aswb.org.
10. Temporary and Community-Based Licenses
If you meet all requirements except for passing the examination, you can apply for a temporary license or a Community-Based License. Both types of licenses expire upon receipt of the permanent license or 24 months from the date of issuance and cannot be renewed or extended.
11. License Verification
If you hold or have held a professional license in another state, you must complete the Licensure Verification form and have it sent directly to the Board office.
12. Application Review
The Board will review your application within 30 days of receiving all materials. You can check the status of your application on the BSRB website under "Services."
