School leaders are under constant pressure to raise early literacy and math outcomes, strengthen student readiness, and respond to growing needs in attention, behavior, and self-regulation. Yet one of the most persistent questions remains: What actually makes a difference in kindergarten classrooms?
A large-scale research study, “Teacher Quality and Learning Outcomes in Kindergarten” (Araujo, Carneiro, Cruz-Aguayo, & Schady, 2016), offers unusually strong evidence—because it relies on an “as-good-as-random” assignment of students to teachers within schools and includes rich measures of both student outcomes and classroom practice.
For districts and school teams (including specialized service providers like TinyEYE supporting student success through online therapy), the findings point to a practical takeaway: classroom interaction quality is measurable, meaningful, and connected to both academic and “learning-to-learn” skills.
The study in plain language: what they did and why it matters
The researchers followed two cohorts of kindergarten students in Ecuador—more than 24,000 children total—and assessed learning at the end of the school year using 12 tests spanning:
- Language (vocabulary, oral comprehension, letter/word recognition, phonological awareness)
- Math (number recognition, sequencing, applied problems, geometry/visual reasoning)
- Executive function (EF) (inhibitory control, working memory, attention, cognitive flexibility)
They also filmed teachers for a full day and coded classroom interactions using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS), a widely used observation framework that captures the quality of teacher-student interactions across emotional support, classroom organization, and instructional support.
Most importantly, students were assigned to classrooms using a rule designed to be essentially random (based on alphabetical ordering and alternating assignment). That design helps address a common problem in education research: students are often not randomly distributed across classrooms, which can make “teacher effects” hard to interpret.
The headline result: classroom quality moves outcomes—across multiple domains
The study found substantial classroom effects. A one standard deviation increase in classroom quality was associated with higher end-of-year test scores of:
- +0.11 SD in language
- +0.11 SD in math
- +0.07 SD in executive function
In other words, the classroom a child lands in can meaningfully shape not only early academic learning, but also the self-regulatory skills that support learning throughout school.
Why executive function is a big deal for schools
Executive function includes skills like focusing attention, resisting impulses, remembering steps, and switching strategies. These are foundational for classroom participation: listening to directions, waiting turns, persisting through challenging tasks, and regulating emotions.
For many school teams, EF is also where the work of educators intersects with the work of specialized service providers. What predicts effectiveness? Not what you might expect
A central tension in education policy is how to identify and develop effective teachers. This study reinforces a finding seen in other contexts: easy-to-observe teacher characteristics explain surprisingly little.
In the Ecuador sample:
- Rookie teachers (≤3 years of experience) were associated with lower student outcomes on average.
- But many other characteristics—such as tenure status, teacher IQ, and personality traits—did not consistently predict student learning.
So what did matter? Teacher behaviors as seen in the classroom. Higher CLASS scores—reflecting stronger teacher-student interactions and more responsive teaching—were associated with higher outcomes in language, math, and EF.
Parents can spot better teachers—but don’t (or can’t) adjust much
The researchers also surveyed families. Two findings stand out:
- Parents generally recognized better teachers. They rated teachers higher when those teachers produced more learning and had stronger CLASS scores.
- Parents did not substantially change home behaviors or inputs in response to being assigned a better or worse teacher (at least not in the measurable ways captured by the survey).
This matters because it suggests the classroom effects observed are largely driven by what happens in the classroom itself—not by families compensating for weaker instruction or “adding on” when instruction is strong.
What this means for school leaders: measure what happens in the room
If resumes and credentials don’t reliably predict outcomes, and if classroom interaction quality does, then a practical implication is to invest in systems that strengthen and support instruction where it counts: daily teacher-student interactions.
That can include:
- High-quality observation and coaching focused on interaction quality (not just compliance checklists)
- Early-career support for rookie teachers, who may need targeted mentoring in classroom management, routines, and responsive instruction
- Professional learning that builds skills connected to CLASS-like domains (emotional support, organization, instructional feedback)
