Understanding Social Hierarchies in PE for Students with Visual Impairments
Recent research sheds light on the experiences of students with visual impairments (VI) in physical education (PE) classes in Germany. The study titled “… and after That Came Me”. Subjective Constructions of Social Hierarchy in Physical Education Classes among Youth with Visual Impairments in Germany explores how these students perceive social hierarchies and their feelings of being valued or devalued in PE settings.
Key Findings
The study involved episodic interviews with four students (two male and two female, average age 19.25 years) who provided insights into their PE experiences. Here are some key findings:
- Students primarily reported negative experiences characterized by bullying, discrimination, and social isolation.
- Social hierarchy was identified as a critical underlying structure affecting students' feelings of being valued or devalued.
- It was not the setting per se that determined social hierarchy, but the concrete manifestation of social interactions and behaviors.
Implications for Practitioners
Understanding these findings can help practitioners improve their skills and approaches in inclusive education. Here are some practical steps to consider:
- Enhance Teacher Training: Educators should receive training on inclusive practices and the specific needs of students with VI.
- Implement Accommodations: Ensure that PE activities are adapted to include all students, providing necessary tools and adjustments.
- Foster Positive Social Interactions: Encourage peer support and understanding to create a more inclusive and supportive environment.
- Address Bullying Proactively: Develop clear policies and interventions to prevent and address bullying and discrimination.
Encouraging Further Research
While this study provides valuable insights, further research is needed to explore the experiences of students with VI in different contexts and educational settings. Practitioners are encouraged to engage in or support research efforts to better understand and address the unique challenges faced by these students.
