The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) is a crucial standardized academic achievement test that measures how well students have learned and can apply the defined knowledge and skills in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) at each tested grade, subject, and course. Every STAAR question is directly aligned with the TEKS currently in effect for the grade and subject or course being assessed.
STAAR plays a significant role in ensuring that Texas students are competitive both nationally and internationally. Additionally, it helps gauge how well schools and teachers are preparing their students academically. This assessment also fulfills the requirements of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, which mandates that all students be assessed in specific grades and subjects throughout their academic careers.
STAAR is administered online in various subjects including mathematics, reading language arts (RLA), science, and social studies for students in grades 3–8 and high school. There are also online tests in Spanish for students in grades 3–5.
Who Is Tested?
All students enrolled in Texas public schools and open-enrollment charter schools in grades 3–8 and specific high school courses are required by both federal and state law to participate in STAAR. This means that virtually every student in these grades and courses will be taking these assessments.
Key Benefits of STAAR
- Academic Competitiveness: Ensures Texas students are on par with their peers nationally and internationally.
- Teacher and School Accountability: Helps evaluate how effectively schools and teachers are preparing students.
- Compliance with Federal Law: Meets the requirements of the Every Student Succeeds Act.
