Identify Needs
The journey begins with a request for evaluation. If you or someone at the school is concerned about your child's development, you can ask the school to conduct an evaluation. The school will either proceed with the evaluation or provide a notice explaining why it won't conduct one. The multidisciplinary evaluation team (MET) will review the results and other available information to determine your child's needs.Determine Eligibility
Once the evaluation is complete, the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team will determine whether your child is eligible for special education services based on state eligibility criteria. As a parent, you are a vital member of this team, and your input is highly valued.Develop the Individualized Education Program (IEP)
If your child is found eligible, the next step is to develop an IEP. This document is crafted by you and the IEP Team and outlines the specific goals for your child and the services the school district will provide to help achieve these goals. Resources like the Michigan Alliance for Families and the U.S. Department of Education offer more detailed information about IEPs.Placement in an Educational Setting
Your child will be placed in the least restrictive environment (LRE), which means they will participate in a general education setting with peers without disabilities as much as possible. This approach aims to provide the necessary support while ensuring your child is included in the broader school community.Provide Specialized Instruction
Specialized instruction tailored to your child's needs will be provided to help them make progress toward their educational goals. This instruction is designed based on the needs identified during the evaluation process.Measure Results
The school will monitor your child's progress in meeting their educational goals. These results are reviewed during the annual IEP meeting, along with regular progress reports on goals and objectives.Review the IEP and Make Changes as Needed
The IEP Team, including you, will meet at least once a year to review and update the IEP. As your child grows and their needs evolve, the team will make necessary adjustments to the IEP. Parents can request an IEP meeting at any time by putting the request in writing. For more information, please follow this link.
