Education, Experience & Examination Requirements
To qualify for a license, you must meet one of the following requirements:
- Provide an official copy of the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA); or
- Submit official documentation for all of the following:
- Official transcripts conferring a master’s degree in speech pathology or its equivalent, sent directly from your college or university to the board office.
- Verification of completion of at least 400 hours of supervised clinical training.
- Verification of nine months of full-time clinical experience, or its equivalent, completed after obtaining your master’s degree under the supervision of a licensed speech pathologist.
- Results of the Praxis Examination.
Applicants Licensed in Another State
If you have been previously licensed, registered, or certified in another state, you must:
- Meet the requirements established in the Iowa Administrative Code (IAC) 481—740.2.
- Submit official license verification for all states where you have been licensed. You must verify at least five years of licensure as an independent licensee in one or more states.
The license verification should include:
- Licensee Name
- License Number
- Issue Date
- Expiration Date
- License Status
- Reference to Any Pending or Past Disciplinary Action
If online verification is not available, the verification must be sent directly from the licensing board(s). Note that applicants who do not meet the requirements for licensure by endorsement may be eligible for a license by verification.
Renewal
You can renew your license up to 60 days before it expires. It's advisable to renew early to avoid a late fee or a lapse in licensure. Ensure all continuing education requirements are completed before submitting your renewal application. Multiple renewal notifications will be sent if the license has not yet been renewed.
