Unlocking the Path to OT Licensing in California: Your Questions Answered!

Unlocking the Path to OT Licensing in California: Your Questions Answered!

Are you an aspiring occupational therapist (OT) looking to practice in California? Navigating the licensing process can seem daunting, but we're here to make it easier for you. TinyEYE provides online therapy services to schools, and we understand the importance of having qualified professionals on board. In this blog, we'll answer some frequently asked questions about OT licensing in California.

Can I check the progress of my application on BreEZe?

Yes, you can! The BreEZe system allows you to monitor the status of your application and will notify you if there are any deficiencies. It's a handy tool to keep track of your progress and ensure everything is on the right track.

Is there an application fee?

Yes, there is an application fee of $50.00, which must be submitted with your application. Note that this fee is separate from the initial license fee, which will be discussed later.

How can I get an application for a license?

You can access the application online at www.bot.ca.gov. However, if you are not located in California, you will need to email the Board at cbot@dca.ca.gov or call 916-263-2294 to have fingerprint cards sent to you. A complete application package can also be mailed to you upon request.

What are the requirements for a foreign-trained occupational therapist?

If you were trained outside of the United States, you must meet the educational and supervised fieldwork requirements outlined in the Occupational Therapy Practice Act (OTPA) section 2570.6. Additionally, you must pass the entry-level certification examination administered by NBCOT. Note that there are no recognized occupational therapy assistant programs by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists. Also, you must have a US Social Security Number before the Board can issue a license.

I have had a conviction in the past. Will that affect me getting a license?

The Board's primary responsibility is consumer protection. Therefore, they have the authority to deny a license due to a conviction of a crime or offense related to the qualifications, functions, or duties of a license holder. When considering whether to issue or deny a license, the Board looks at the nature of the crime/act, the time elapsed since it occurred, and evidence of rehabilitation. If your license is denied, you are entitled to due process under the law according to the Administrative Procedure Act.

I have a license issued by another state. Is there a grace period for me to work in California without a California license?

Yes, there is a grace period. If you hold a current, active, and non-restricted license from another state, you can work in California for 60 calendar days from the date your application is received by the Board. However, you must work in association with a California-licensed OT. Be sure to send your application with a return receipt requested to confirm the date the Board receives it.

How long do I have to complete my application?

Applications are considered abandoned two years from the date they are received or, for completed applications, 60 days from the date of the approval letter.

How much is the initial license fee?

The initial license fee is prorated based on your date of birth and the month the license is issued. You will be notified of the fee in your approval letter.
