At TinyEYE, we understand the vital role speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play in enhancing the communication skills of students. Whether you're considering a career in speech-language pathology or looking to provide telepractice services in Virginia, it's essential to understand the licensure requirements set by the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (BASLP).
Why Licensure is Essential
In Virginia, practicing speech-language pathology without a license is not only illegal but can also result in severe consequences, including public disciplinary action or even criminal prosecution. Licensure ensures that SLPs meet the high standards necessary to provide effective and safe services to clients.
General Licensure Requirements
According to § 54.1-2603 of the Code of Virginia, a license issued by the BASLP is required to practice speech-language pathology within the Commonwealth of Virginia. This applies regardless of the delivery method, including telepractice.
Telepractice Licensure
If you're providing speech-language pathology services via telepractice to clients within Virginia, a BASLP-issued license is required. The type of license depends on the practice setting:
- Public School Division: A school speech-language pathology license is sufficient.
- Other Settings: A full speech-language pathology license is necessary.
Practicing in Schools
For SLPs working in public school divisions, one of the following licenses is required:
- School speech-language pathology license
- Provisional speech-language pathology license
- Full speech-language pathology license
It's crucial to note that practicing solely in public school divisions means you cannot provide private treatment to clients.
Practice as a Student, Intern, or Trainee
Students, interns, or trainees in speech-language pathology must be enrolled in an accredited university or college or working in a recognized training center. A clinical fellowship year is required for licensure, and during this period, a provisional license is necessary to practice in Virginia.
Licensure Renewal and Maintenance
All licenses must be renewed annually by June 30th. A provisional license expires 18 months from the date of issuance. Practicing with a lapsed license is considered illegal and can result in disciplinary action.
