Are you an aspiring Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) looking to practice in Manitoba? The path to licensure can seem daunting, but we’ve broken it down into manageable steps. Here’s everything you need to know to get started on your professional journey.
Step One: Initial Application
The first step is to complete the initial application process. This involves:
- Submitting an online application through the CASLPM registration portal.
- Providing proof of identity and eligibility to work in Canada (e.g., a valid driver’s license or passport).
- Submitting official transcripts directly from your educational institution.
- Completing various record and registry checks, including a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, Adult Abuse Registry Check, and Child Abuse Registry Check.
- Demonstrating language proficiency in either English or French.
- Completing a Provisional Mentorship Agreement form.
- Paying a non-refundable application fee.
Step Two: Certificate of Registration
Once your application is assessed and approved, you can obtain a Certificate of Registration. However, this certificate alone does not allow you to practice in Manitoba. You’ll need to:
- Pay the Certificate of Registration fee online through the registration portal.
Step Three: Certificate of Practice
To practice as an SLP in Manitoba, you’ll need a Certificate of Practice. This involves:
- Entering your Professional Liability Insurance Details in your online account.
- Paying the Certificate of Practice fee online once your liability insurance coverage is approved.
Important Notes
- All information must be submitted to the CASLPM office by the applicant.
- Recent Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, Child Abuse Registry Check, and Adult Abuse Registry Check are required.
- The processing of the application may take up to three to four weeks from the date CASLPM receives your completed application, including all supporting documents.
- If you are registered under a provisional or supervision category with another province, you will be transferring to the equivalent registration category with CASLPM.
For International Applicants
If you are internationally educated, additional steps include:
- Credential assessment by a third-party agency.
- Language proficiency testing if your program was not in English or French.
- Submitting all required documents to CASLPM.
Application Categories
- Provisional Regulated Registrant: Newly-graduated international applicants who have not undergone a period of mentorship and do not have at least 750 hours of work experience.
- Full Regulated Registrant: International graduates who have completed their education, undergone a period of mentorship, or have at least 750 hours of work experience.
Additional Registration Requirements
To be registered in Manitoba, you need:
- A professional master’s degree or equivalency in audiology or speech-language pathology.
- Satisfactory proof of identity and current legal name.
- Evidence of good standing in each jurisdiction where you have been registered or licensed to practice.
- Satisfactory criminal record, child abuse registry, and adult abuse registry checks.
- Proof of legal entitlement to work in Canada.
Assessment Process
There are three stages in the assessment process:
- Initial Application: Create an account in the CASLPM portal, enter personal and professional information, pay applicable fees, and upload required documents.
- Assessment: Your application will be reviewed by CASLPM assessors from the same profession. The Registrar may forward the application to the Application Review Committee (ARC) if necessary.
- Post-Assessment: You will be notified if you are eligible to sit for the CETP exam or if there are gaps in your application that need to be addressed.
