Step 2: Submit to a Criminal Background Check
Missouri requires all applicants to pre-register online for fingerprinting through the Missouri Automated Criminal History Site (MACHS). The background check fee is $41.75, payable online. For more details, visit the Missouri DESE Background Check Procedures page.
Step 3: Examination Requirements
To obtain your license, you must pass the Missouri Content Assessment for School Counselor (Test 056) with a score of 220 or higher. This computer-based exam includes 100 multiple-choice questions and costs $73. For more information or to register, visit the testing website.
Step 4: Required Fees
If you earned your degree from a Missouri institution, there is no application fee for the initial certificate. Non-Missouri graduates will need to pay a $100 application fee.
Step 5: Organize Your Application Materials
Your application package should include:
- Completed profile and application through the Missouri Department of Education website
- Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
- Proof of passing scores from the Missouri Content Assessment for School Counselor (Test 056)
- $100 application fee (if applicable)
Step 6: Submit Your Application
Complete the online Initial application using the web application portal. Submit the application to the Missouri college/university where you completed your degree. The institution will verify your program and forward the application to the DESE for processing. Monitor your application status online through the DESE website.
