AI Is Here—So Let’s Use It Wisely
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a “future” topic in K-12 education. In June 2024, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) released AI Guidance for Enhancing K-12 and Library Education, a living resource designed to help educators, librarians, administrators, students, and communities navigate AI with clarity and care. The guidance emphasizes responsible use, ethical decision-making, data privacy, and continuous improvement.

- AI as a tool: Useful for drafting, brainstorming, translation support, accessibility, and practice opportunities.
- AI as a partner (when appropriate): A thinking companion that helps students explore ideas and reflect.

Partner Engagement: Don’t Roll Out AI in a Vacuum

Schools don’t need to “solve AI bias” to start using AI responsibly—but they do need to teach staff and students how to spot bias, question outputs, and mitigate harm.

- Continuous learning and adaptability
It also points educators to practical learning resources and platforms, including:

- Privacy safeguards: Whether data is anonymized and secured properly
And evaluating:

- Student surveys: Satisfaction, perceived gains, and concerns
