Catch-Up Without Burnout: Smart, School-Friendly Ways to Accelerate Learning

Three years after the onset of the pandemic, many schools are still asking the same urgent question: how do we help students catch up—without overwhelming them, families, or staff?

Recent national and district-level data paint a tough picture. Progress in reading and math has been slower than what was typical before the pandemic, and in many places the pace of learning has actually decelerated. In practical terms, some estimates suggest students may need roughly an extra four months of reading instruction and four-and-a-half months of math instruction to match a “typical” pre-pandemic year of learning.

Even more concerning, the burden isn’t evenly distributed. Students in high-poverty schools and many students of color were hit hardest and, in many cases, remain furthest behind. Middle school students also tend to face a longer road to recovery than elementary students.

The good news is that research does not leave schools empty-handed. Some interventions show strong evidence of impact—especially when they are implemented in ways that protect core instruction time, support students’ social and emotional needs, and make it easy for families to understand what’s being offered and why.
