Steps to Submit Your Application
Here's a quick guide to submitting your application:
- Create an account on the licensure portal.
- Complete the application form.
- Pay the $120 application fee online.
Educational Requirements
Applicants must meet specific educational requirements to qualify for an Occupational Therapy license in Iowa. Ensure you have:
- Official transcripts showing completion of an occupational therapy degree from a program approved by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education of the American Occupational Therapy Association.
- Proof of completion of a supervised fieldwork experience.
These transcripts must be sent directly from your college or university to the board office.
Special Instructions for Foreign-Trained Applicants
If you received your education outside of the United States, it's essential to contact the board office to understand the specific educational requirements you must meet.
Examination Requirement
All applicants must provide proof of a passing score on the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) Exam. Ensure that the score is sent directly to the Board office by NBCOT via score transfer. Remember, you do not need to send the verification of certification.
For Applicants Previously Licensed in Another State
If you've been licensed in another state, you'll need to provide one of the following:
- Proof of 30 hours of Iowa Board-approved continuing education courses completed within the two years preceding your application.
- Evidence of practicing as a licensed OT for at least 2,080 hours during the two years immediately preceding your application (e.g., a letter from your employer).
- Proof of serving as a full-time faculty member teaching OT for at least one year during the two years preceding your application.
- Proof of a passing NBCOT exam score within the two years preceding your application.
Verification of Licenses Held in Other States
If you've been licensed, registered, or certified in any other state, you must provide official verification of your licensure. This verification should include your license issue date, expiration date, and any pending or past disciplinary actions. You can print this from another state licensing board’s website if it contains all the required information. If not, request that it be sent directly to the Iowa Board office.
