Empowering Voices: Navigating Speech Pathology Licensure in South Carolina
As Special Education Directors, we are often at the forefront of ensuring that our students receive the highest quality of care and support. This responsibility extends to the professionals we bring into our schools, including speech-language pathologists and audiologists. Understanding the licensure requirements in South Carolina is crucial for both compliance and the assurance of professional standards.
Understanding the Licensure Process
In South Carolina, no individual may practice speech-language pathology or audiology without a valid license, unless they are in an exempt setting. This regulation ensures that only qualified professionals are entrusted with the critical task of supporting our students' communication needs.
The licensure is specific to either speech-language pathology or audiology and is valid for two years. Licenses must be renewed biennially, expiring on March 31 of the second year. It's important to note that applications received after December 31 of the second year are valid for the next licensure period, while those received before this date apply to the current period.
Licensure Requirements
To be licensed, an individual must meet several key requirements:
- Possess a post-graduate degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology from an accredited program equivalent to those recognized by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).
- Pass an exam approved by the board.
- Complete supervised professional employment, defined as at least 30 hours per week for nine months under the supervision of a licensed speech-language pathologist or audiologist.
- Meet ASHA's Standards for Certificate of Clinical Competence or hold a current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence.
Application Process
The application process requires careful attention to detail. Applicants must submit a fully completed notarized application with the appropriate fee. Verification of current ASHA certification, licensure in other states, official transcripts, supervised clinical experience, and supervised professional experience must also be provided.
For those holding an ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence, only the notarized application, ASHA verification, and state licensure verification are needed. All others must submit comprehensive documentation as outlined by the board.
Fees and Financial Considerations
Understanding the fee structure is crucial to avoid delays. Fees are non-refundable and must be submitted via check or money order. Incorrect amounts will result in the application being returned for re-issuance.
- Initial License Application Fee: $200 for Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists; $100 for Interns; $40 for Assistants.
- Biennial Renewal Fee: $140 for Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists; $90 for Inactive Licenses; $30 for Assistants.
- Reinstatement Fee (for late renewals): $50.
- Upgrade Fee from Intern to Active License: $220.
- Miscellaneous Fees include license verification, changes in supervision, name changes, and more.
