Embarking on Your Journey: Navigating Oklahoma's SLP Licensure Process
In the realm of speech-language pathology, acquiring the appropriate licensure is not just a formality—it's a gateway to making a profound impact on the lives of children and communities. For those aspiring to practice in Oklahoma, understanding the licensing process is crucial. This blog provides a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the steps towards obtaining your Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) license in Oklahoma.
Application Process: Choose Your Path
Oklahoma offers two pathways for applying for an SLP license:
- Online Application: Visit Oklahoma.gov/obespa, click on 'On-line Applications', select your license type, and follow the instructions to set up an account.
- Paper Application: Go to the same website, navigate to 'License Information', click on 'Forms', and find the appropriate application form for your license type.
Timing Your Submission
Applications must be submitted one week prior to each Board meeting. For those pursuing licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist, Speech-Language Pathology Assistant, Clinical Fellow, or Audiologist, a temporary license will be issued once all checklist items are received. Audiology Assistants, however, will be approved for a license at a Board Meeting without a temporary license.
Reference Letter Requirements
The Board requires a specific reference letter form, accessible under 'License Information' on the website. While not needed for Speech-Language Pathology Assistants or Audiology Assistants, this form can be emailed, faxed, or mailed by either the licensee or the reference provider. Sealed envelopes are not necessary.
Updating Your Name
To change your name on your license or certificate, provide the Board office with legal documentation such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or legal name change document. Fees apply for remaking a licensure card ($5.00) or a new large certificate ($25.00). If a new card is not needed, documentation can be emailed or faxed for system updates.
Requesting a License Verification Letter
To request a verification letter, send a $5.00 payment along with a written request to the Board office. If the requesting state provides a form, include it with your payment. If not, provide the licensee's name, license number, and mailing address. Remember to remit payment to OBESPA at 3700 N Classen Blvd Ste 248, Oklahoma City, OK 73118, and avoid sending cash.
Clinical Fellowship Licensure Requirements
For Clinical Fellows, the following are required:
- Completed Application
- Passport Photo
- Application Fee of $85.00
- Citizenship Affidavit
- Academic Preparation Practicum Form
- CF Plan and Letters of Agreement
- 3 Letters of Reference (on required form)
- Official Transcripts
- Background Check from Trak-1
- Supervisor's 6 hours of CEU Training
Alternatively, licensure after completion of CF requires the application fee, a report of clinical fellowship, and passing Praxis scores, or a current ASHA card and verification letter.
For those with current ASHA CCCS or licensure from another state, the requirements slightly differ but remain structured to ensure the highest standards in professional practice.
