Are you considering a career as a school counselor in Utah? Whether you’re attending an in-state or out-of-state program, understanding the licensing requirements is crucial. This blog will break down the steps you need to take to become a licensed school counselor in Utah.
In-State Licensing Requirements
If you’re attending a master’s program in school counseling at an institution within Utah, here are the requirements you need to meet:
- Earn a minimum of a master’s degree in school counseling from one of the following accredited institutions: Utah State University, University of Utah, Utah Valley University, or Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Note that Rocky Mountain University also offers a license-only program for those with a master’s degree or license in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC).
- Pass the PRAXIS 5422 Test with a score of 153 or higher. If you take the PRAXIS 5421 before September 1, 2023, a score of 164 or higher will be accepted.
- Receive a recommendation for licensure from the university where you completed your program. This recommendation qualifies you to receive the College and Career Readiness Certificate upon licensure.
Out-of-State Licensing Requirements
If you’re attending a master’s program in school counseling at an institution outside of Utah, here are the steps you need to follow:
- Earn a minimum of a master’s degree in school counseling from an institution accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Program (CACREP) or another regionally recognized accrediting body that meets the Board-approved Standards for Utah School Counselor Education Programs.
- Be licensed in the state where you completed your program.
- Complete the Utah State Board of Education College and Career Readiness Certificate Program.
