Are you an aspiring speech-language pathologist looking to practice in Virginia? The process of obtaining a provisional license might seem daunting, but we're here to break it down for you in a few easy steps. Here's everything you need to know about applying for a provisional license to practice as a speech-language pathologist in Virginia.
Laws and Regulations
First things first, you need to attest that you have read the applicable laws and regulations. This is a crucial step to ensure you are fully aware of the professional standards and legal requirements in Virginia.
Application Processing and Documentation
When applying, you are responsible for notifying the source of the required documents to submit information directly to the board office. This can be done via email, fax, or postal mail. If needed, an optional form for licensure verification is available. Remember, it can take up to 21 business days from the initial mailing for the board staff to receive and process your application. You will receive an initial email notification of receipt and a list of any missing documentation.
Application and Fee
Submit your application along with a nonrefundable fee of $50.00. Make sure all your information is accurate to avoid delays.
PRAXIS Scores
Use Board Code 9347 to have your PRAXIS score released to the Virginia Department of Health Professions' Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. This step is essential to validate your qualification.
National Practitioner Data Bank Query (NPDB)
Request a current digital self-query report from the NPDB. There is a processing fee for this service. Once you receive the digital report, email it to the board office at audbd@dhp.virginia.gov.
Initial License Expiration Dates
A provisional license expires 18 months from the date of issuance and can be renewed for an additional six months. Make sure to keep track of your license expiration date to avoid any interruptions in your practice.
Supervision/Supervisors
Review §54.1-2604 of the Code of Virginia and 18VAC30-21-70 (D), (E), & (F) of the Regulations Governing the Practice of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. Supervisors are no longer required to notify the Board of their intent to provide supervision for a provisionally licensed speech-language pathologist.
Board Communication
The Board communicates with applicants via email. Make sure to check your email regularly for updates and requests for additional information.
