Schools everywhere wrestle with the same big question: if we add more time to the school day, will students actually learn more?
It’s an appealing idea. More minutes in class should mean more learning, right? But in the real world, it’s hard to separate “more time” from everything else that affects achievement: school resources, community factors, student backgrounds, and even how students are assigned to schools.
A research study from Colombia helps cut through the noise. It looks at what happens when schools move between half-day schedules and full-day schedules—and whether those shifts are linked to better academic outcomes.
What the study examined (in plain language)
In Colombia, many schools operate on different schedules:
- Complete schedule: about a 7-hour school day
- Half schedule: about a 4-hour day (often run in shifts, with one group in the morning and another in the afternoon)
The study analyzed standardized test results (SABER tests) for:
- 5th grade students
- 9th grade students
It focused on math and language scores across three testing years: 2002, 2005, and 2009.
Why this evidence is especially useful
One of the toughest parts of studying school time is selection bias. For example, higher-performing schools might be more likely to offer longer days, which would make longer days look “better” even if they aren’t the real cause.
This study used a strong approach: it compared the same schools over time when they switched schedules. That helps control for many unchanging factors about a school (like location, long-term leadership patterns, or community characteristics) and gets closer to the true impact of a longer day.
The headline finding: longer days were linked to higher test scores
Among schools that switched schedules, the cohorts of students who experienced the complete (7-hour) schedule scored about one-tenth of a standard deviation higher than cohorts who experienced half-day schedules.
That may sound technical, but in education research, a tenth of a standard deviation is a meaningful bump—especially for system-level changes that affect many students.
Math improved more than language
A consistent pattern showed up: the effect of a longer day was larger in math than in language.
- For 9th grade, the estimated effect was about 0.138 SD in math versus 0.110 SD in language.
- For 5th grade, the effect was also stronger in math (about 0.082 SD in the school fixed-effects model).
One practical interpretation: language development is influenced heavily by factors outside school (home language exposure, reading habits, access to books), while math learning may depend more directly on structured instruction and practice time.
Older students benefited more than younger students
The study found larger gains for 9th graders than for 5th graders.
That matters for planning because it suggests extended time may be especially valuable in secondary grades, where content becomes more complex and where students may benefit from extra structured learning time, support periods, or guided practice.
The biggest gains showed up in rural and low-income schools
Perhaps the most important insight is that the impact wasn’t evenly distributed. The strongest effects were found in:
- Rural schools
- The poorest schools (lowest socioeconomic status category in the dataset)
In other words, longer school days appeared to be a lever for reducing inequality, not just raising averages.
This aligns with a common theme in education research: when students have fewer learning supports outside of school, increasing high-quality learning time inside school can have a larger payoff.
More time helps—but quality still decides the outcome
The study also highlights a reality that school leaders already know: time is only as valuable as how it’s used.
In some policy discussions, extra hours are dedicated to enrichment (sports, arts, civics). Those can be wonderful for whole-child development, but they may not move math and language scores as much as targeted instruction, tutoring, or structured intervention blocks.
So the key question becomes: if a district extends the day, what will fill that time?
- More direct instruction in high-need subjects
- Small-group support for students who are behind
- Time for practice, feedback, and skill-building
- Integrated services that reduce barriers to learning
