Continuing education is essential for Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) to stay current with the latest research, techniques, and ethical practices. In Wisconsin, SLPs are required to complete 20 hours of continuing education (CE) every biennium. Here's a breakdown of what you need to know to fulfill these requirements:
General Requirements
SLPs in Wisconsin must complete a total of 20 hours of CE every two years. These hours must include at least two hours related to ethics. The biennium runs from February 1st of an odd year to January 31st of the next odd year. Notably, this requirement does not apply to the biennium when the license was first issued.
Approved Providers
CE courses must be offered through one of the following organizations:
- American Academy of Audiology (AAA)
- American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
- Department of Public Instruction (DPI)
- International Hearing Society (IHS)
- National Board for Certification in Hearing Instrument Sciences (NBC-HIS)
Courses from other providers are acceptable if they are approved by one of the organizations listed above.
Graduate Courses
Graduate courses from an accredited university are also acceptable, provided they directly relate to Speech-Language Pathology.
Pre-Approval for Other Courses
CE courses not meeting the above criteria must be submitted by the course provider to the Board for pre-approval. This submission must occur 30 calendar days prior to the first date the CE program or course of study is offered. The required form for this process is the Continuing Education Approval Request Form #2440.
Important Considerations
It's essential to keep track of your CE hours and ensure that the courses you take meet the state's requirements. Failing to comply with these requirements can result in penalties or loss of licensure.
