Introduction
As a Special Education Director, I understand the importance of ensuring that occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants (OTs and OTAs) are licensed and ready to provide the necessary services to our students. The North Dakota Board of Occupational Therapy requires licenses to be renewed every two years, and it is crucial to adhere to their guidelines to avoid any disruption in service delivery. This blog will guide you through the renewal process, ensuring a smooth experience.
Application for Renewal of License
The renewal of OT and OTA licenses in North Dakota must be done online. The renewal window opens on April 1 and closes on June 30. Applications submitted after June 1 will incur a late fee. The fees are as follows:
- OTs: $150 (April 1 - June 1)
- OTAs: $110 (April 1 - June 1)
- Late Fee (June 2 - June 30): $100
Payments must be made via credit or debit card at the time of application submission.
Online Renewal Process
To complete the online renewal, you will need:
- Your last name, ND license number, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number for login.
- A credit or debit card for payment.
- Documentation for any "yes" answers to legal questions, which must be uploaded.
- Continuing education completion certificates.
Ensure that your browser is either Google Chrome or Internet Explorer for optimal performance. Avoid using mobile devices as they may cause issues during the process.
Continuing Education and Jurisprudence Exam
Before starting your renewal, have your Continuing Education Units (CEUs) ready. The form will prompt you to enter the CEU information and upload the certificates. The date format should be mm/dd/yyyy, and only use number digits for the hours.
During the renewal process, you will be required to take the Jurisprudence Exam, which covers the laws and rules governing OT practice in North Dakota. There is no passing score, and you will be informed of any incorrect answers after completion. The exam information is available under the Regulations tab on the Board's website.
OTA-Specific Requirements
OTAs must upload a completed Substantiation of Supervision Form signed by their main OT supervisor. This is mandatory even if there have been no changes in supervision. Supervision is a critical component of OTA practice, and the Board emphasizes its importance.
Saving and Exiting the Renewal Process
Use the "Save for Later" button to save your progress if you need to exit the renewal process temporarily. Avoid using the browser's back button to prevent data loss. If you encounter issues with online renewal, contact the Board office for a paper form.
Conclusion
Once you have submitted your renewal, the Board will review it. Upon approval, you will receive an email with a link to print your updated licensure renewal card. Ensure your information is current and accurate to avoid any delays.
