Understanding School Counselor Licensing in Wisconsin: A Comprehensive Guide

Understanding School Counselor Licensing in Wisconsin: A Comprehensive Guide

As a Special Education Director, staying informed about the various licensing requirements for school counselors in Wisconsin is crucial. Understanding these requirements not only ensures compliance but also aids in effective staffing and support for our students. This blog provides an easy-to-read guide on the different types of school counselor licenses available in Wisconsin.

School Counselor License Types

Wisconsin offers four main types of school counselor licenses. Each type serves a specific purpose and is designed for counselors at different stages of their careers. Let's break them down:

Tier I - One Year License with Stipulations

This license is intended for candidates who have not yet met all the requirements of their approved program to obtain a full license. It's a temporary solution that allows aspiring counselors to work while they complete their qualifications.

Tier II - Provisional License

The Provisional License is for educators who have completed an approved educator preparation program for the first time in a specific license category (Teaching, Administrator, or Pupil Services) after September 23, 2017. This license is a stepping stone to a more permanent status.

Tier III - Lifetime License

A Lifetime License may be issued to educators who have successfully completed at least six semesters of experience in their provisional educator license category and have met all statutory requirements. This license offers long-term stability and recognition for experienced educators.

Tier IV - Master License

The Master License is an optional, advanced credential for educators who hold or qualify to hold a Wisconsin Lifetime Educator License in school counseling. To earn this license, counselors must successfully complete a National Board for Professional Teaching Certification (NBPTS) or a Wisconsin Master Educator Assessment Process (WMEAP).
