Starting a career in special education can be both exciting and challenging. To help new educators navigate these early years, Wisconsin's Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has introduced the Special Educator Induction Program. This initiative is designed to provide essential support, professional development, and networking opportunities for first and second-year special educators.
Why Induction Programs Matter
Research shows that first-year teachers who participate in comprehensive induction activities are half as likely to leave the field compared to those who do not. This is why Wisconsin DPI, through an IDEA Discretionary Grant, is rolling out a regional induction program to support new special educators. The goal is to build a solid foundation for these educators, ensuring they have the tools and support needed to thrive in their roles.
What Does the Induction Program Offer?
The induction program is packed with valuable opportunities:
- Six "just-in-time†professional development sessions: These sessions cover high-leverage practices in instructional and special education compliance content, including:
- Explicit Instruction
- Student Engagement
- Social Emotional Skills
- Comprehensive Evaluation
- IEP Development and Meeting Facilitation
- Progress Monitoring
- Six coaching sessions: Trained coaches will provide one-on-one support to help educators apply what they learn.
- Six support networking sessions: Facilitated by trained professionals, these sessions aim to build emotional resilience and create a supportive cohort. Topics include:
- Building a Network of Support
- Professional Purpose and Passion
- Emotional Awareness
- Behavior as Communication
- Positive Thinking
- Professional Boundaries
Who Should Attend?
The program is specifically designed for:
- First or second-year special educators
- Special educators holding a License with Stipulations
Cost and Commitment
There is no cost to the school district for participating in the induction program. In fact, participating districts will receive up to $1,500 per participant to offset the costs associated with the program. However, districts must commit to providing the necessary release time for new educators to participate in these activities.
How to Participate
Each CESA (Cooperative Educational Service Agency) will select 25 participants to join the induction program. For more information, contact your local CESA.
