Unlocking the Power of Digital Health: How Online Patient Portals Can Transform STI Prevention

The digital age has brought about significant changes in how we manage and share personal health information. One of the most promising advancements is the use of online patient portals. These secure platforms provide individuals with 24-hour access to their personal health records, including laboratory test results and prescriptions. A recent study conducted at a historically Black college (HBCU) highlights the potential of these portals in addressing disparities in sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, among Black youth.

The Study: A Closer Look

The research titled "Digital technology to address HIV and other sexually transmitted infection disparities: Intentions to disclose online personal health records to sex partners among students at a historically Black college" explores how students perceive and intend to use online patient portals for disclosing STI test histories. The study involved 354 co-ed students aged 18 to 25 years who participated in an online survey. The findings revealed that approximately 59% of participants expressed intentions to use these portals for sharing their STI test results with partners.
