Empowering Change: Navigating SLP License Renewal in Maryland
As a Special Education Director, I understand the complexities and nuances of maintaining professional licensure. It's crucial for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and other related professionals to stay updated with the latest requirements and processes. In Maryland, this includes the imperative of Implicit Bias Training and understanding the timelines for license renewal. Let's explore these essential components to ensure a smooth renewal process.
Implicit Bias Training: A Step Towards Inclusivity
Maryland has made it mandatory for all licensees to complete Implicit Bias Training as part of their renewal process. This training is designed to raise awareness about unconscious biases and promote a more inclusive and equitable environment in healthcare settings. Once completed, the certificate of training must be submitted to the Board at mdh.boardofahsm@maryland.gov to finalize your renewal application.
The Renewal Process: Key Dates and Steps
The renewal process in Maryland is structured to ensure that all professionals meet the necessary requirements before their license expiration. Here are the critical steps and timelines:
- The Board issues a renewal notice at least 60 days before the license expiration date.
- Renewal applications must be completed online by midnight on May 31 to avoid a late fee of $100, which is assessed from June 1 through June 30.
- For Music Therapists, the deadline is January 31, 2024, with a late fee applicable from February 1 to February 29, 2024.
- Hearing-Aid Dispensers have until January 31, 2025, to renew without a late fee, which is assessed from February 1 to February 28, 2025.
Once your renewal application is complete, it will be reviewed by Board staff. If selected for a random audit, you must submit your continuing education documentation for approval before your renewal license is issued.
Inactive Status and Reinstatement
If you decide to place your license in inactive status, you can request this during the renewal process. An additional fee of $25 is required for each two-year cycle. If you wish to reactivate your license within five years, you must comply with continuing education requirements and pay the necessary fees. Beyond five years, you must reapply and meet current licensing requirements.
Non-Renewed Status
For licenses in non-renewed status, reinstatement is possible within five years, requiring payment of a $200 reinstatement fee in addition to the renewal and Health Care Commission fees. After five years, reapplication is necessary, adhering to all current requirements.
