Understanding Colorado's SLP License Renewal and Reinstatement Process

Annual License Renewal
All Colorado Speech-Language Pathologist licenses expire on November 30 every year. Practitioners can view their expiration date through their online account. It is important to note that the renewal process opens approximately six weeks prior to the expiration date, providing ample time for SLPs to complete necessary requirements and submit their renewal applications.
Reinstatement Application Checklist
If an SLP's license has expired, they must follow a specific reinstatement process. Below is a simplified checklist to guide applicants through the necessary steps:
- Submit payment of the required application fee via credit card. Note that all fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
- Upload name change documentation, if applicable.
- Answer general and criminal history screening questions and upload supporting documentation.
- Complete the Healthcare Professions Profile, including uploading supporting documentation.
- Detail practice history since the Colorado certificate has expired.
Specific Requirements Based on Expiration Period
The requirements for reinstatement vary depending on how long the certificate has been expired:
- Expired for 2 years or less: Attest to meeting the Colorado Office of Speech-Language Pathology Certification’s Continuing Professional Competency Program requirements for the last 2 years.
- Expired for more than 2 years but less than 5 years: Provide one of the following:
- Submit an active license/certification verification from another jurisdiction and attest to practicing speech-language pathology for a minimum of 2 of the last 5 years on that license/certification.
- Complete 10 hours of Professional Development Activities (PDA) for each year the certificate has been expired, completed within the last 2 years.
- Provide documentation of holding an active certification by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).
- Supply the Director’s letter and any supporting documents to show competency to practice by a Director’s pre-approved competency by another means.
- Expired for 5 years or more: Provide one of the following:
- Submit an active license/certification verification from another jurisdiction and attest to practicing speech-language pathology for a minimum of 2 of the last 5 years on that license/certification.
- Demonstrate completion of the Director’s pre-approved supervised practice for a minimum of 6 months.
- Supply the Director’s letter and any supporting documents to show competency to practice by a Director’s pre-approved competency by another means.
Important Considerations
State guidelines mandate that all applications expire one year from the date of submission. Failure to provide all required documents will result in the application expiring, necessitating the submission of a new application with all new documents and fees.
