Unlock the Secrets of Occupational Therapist Licensure in Delaware: What You Need to Know!

Unlock the Secrets of Occupational Therapist Licensure in Delaware: What You Need to Know!

Understanding Occupational Therapist Licensure in Delaware

Are you an aspiring Occupational Therapist (OT) or currently practicing in another jurisdiction and looking to expand your horizons to Delaware? The licensure process might seem daunting, but with the right information, you can navigate it smoothly. Here, we break down the essential steps and requirements for obtaining your OT license in Delaware, whether you're applying by reciprocity or examination.

Applying for Licensure

Reciprocity

If you already hold a current OT license in another jurisdiction, you're in luck! Delaware offers an option to apply by reciprocity, simplifying the process significantly. This pathway allows you to leverage your existing credentials and transition smoothly into practicing in Delaware.

Examination

If you do not hold a current OT license elsewhere, you'll need to apply by examination. This is also the route for those who hold an active Delaware license as an Occupational Therapist Assistant and wish to upgrade to an OT license. The key requirements include passing the NBCOT OTA exam and fulfilling additional criteria outlined by the Delaware Board.

Getting Started with DELPROS

All applications are processed through DELPROS, Delaware's Professional Regulation Online Services. Paper applications are no longer accepted, making it essential to familiarize yourself with the online system. Here's how to get started:

Requirements and Documentation

Before you begin your application, ensure you understand the requirements for the license you are pursuing. Collect all necessary documents to upload during the application process. Key documents include:

Renewal and Maintenance

Occupational Therapy licenses in Delaware expire on July 31 of even-numbered years. The renewal process is also managed through DELPROS. Keep your contact information updated to receive timely notifications about renewals and audits. Remember, practicing with an expired license is illegal, so ensure you renew on time.

Continuing Education

During renewal, you must attest to completing the required continuing education units (CEs). A percentage of licensees are randomly selected for audits, so maintain records of your CEs.

Fees and Payment

Application and renewal fees are processed through DELPROS. The system allows for convenient payment via a shopping cart feature. Be aware that all processing fees are non-refundable.

For more detailed information, including how to reactivate an inactive license, consult the Board’s Rules and Regulations. Understanding these guidelines will help ensure a smooth licensure process.
