Understanding the Path to Oregon SLP Licensure
For aspiring Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) aiming to practice in Oregon, navigating the licensing process is a critical step. This guide provides a detailed overview of the necessary requirements and steps to obtain your SLP license in Oregon, ensuring you are well-prepared to meet the standards set by the Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (BSPA).
Academic Credentials
The first requirement is submitting official transcripts for your Master’s Degree. If your degree is from an ASHA-accredited program, only your Master’s degree transcripts are needed. These transcripts must be sent directly from the university to the BSPA, preferably as e-transcripts to speechaud.board@bspa.oregon.gov. If your degree is not ASHA-accredited, additional documentation of clinical practicum hours and coursework may be required.
Professional Competence
Applicants must demonstrate professional competence through one of the following:
- ASHA CCC’s (Certificate of Clinical Competence): Request verification from ASHA, which can be faxed directly to the Board.
- Passing Praxis Exam Report: Ensure the BSPA is listed as a recipient (#8699) when taking the exam.
- Clinical Fellowship Report & Rating Form: Submit a copy of the ASHA form signed by both you and your CFY supervisor.
Professional Development
The professional development requirements vary based on the timing of your graduate program or clinical fellowship completion:
- If completed within the past 12 months, no professional development hours are needed.
- If completed more than 12 months ago, submit 10 hours of professional development completed within the past year, along with certificates of attendance.
Verification of Good Standing
To ensure compliance, provide a letter of good standing from every state or jurisdiction where you have held a professional license. This must be sent directly from the jurisdiction to the BSPA.
Background Check
A complete background check is mandatory for all applicants. This process is conducted through Fieldprint, Inc. Follow these steps:
- Visit Fieldprint Oregon.
- Click “Schedule an Appointment” and sign up as a new user.
- Use the Fieldprint Code: FPBSPALicenseDAS and enter BSPA Codes if prompted (ORI #: OR026SLPA, OCA#: SLPA).
Licensing Fees and Renewal
The application review fee is $95. The license fee for SLPs or audiologists is $250, reduced to $125 after May 1, 2023, for licenses expiring on January 30, 2024. For SLPAs, the fee is $100, reduced to $65 after May 1, 2023. A $50 fee applies for the background check. All payments are processed online through the application portal.
Regular licenses expire on January 30 of every even-numbered year, with renewals due by December 31 of every odd-numbered year. The renewal fee matches the initial license fee, and professional development requirements include 20 hours for SLPs/audiologists and 10 hours for SLPAs, with 1 hour focused on cultural competency.
