Applying for the Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) License in New Jersey can seem daunting, but with the right information, it becomes a manageable task. Whether you're a recent graduate or an experienced social worker from another state, this guide will help you navigate the process with ease.
Steps to Apply for LCSW Licensure in New Jersey
1. Complete the Application Form
Begin your journey by filling out the online application form. This is your first step towards becoming a licensed clinical social worker in New Jersey.
2. Pay the Application Fee
Once you've completed the online application, you'll need to pay the application fee as outlined in N.J.A.C. 13:44G-14.1.
3. Submit Your Official Transcript
Your transcript must indicate that you've received a master's degree in social work from an accredited program or a doctorate in social work. Have your school send the transcript directly to:
DCA_Social_Work_No_Reply@dca.njoag.gov.
4. Document Your Supervised Clinical Experience
You'll need to provide "Documentation of Supervised Clinical Experience" forms showing the required number of work experience hours. Make sure to include:
- A copy of your supervisor's Board-approved 20-hour supervision course.
- An official job description on agency letterhead from Human Resources.
- If applicable, a letter from your employer allowing you to discuss casework with an outside LCSW supervisor.
5. Pass the ASWB Clinical Exam
Once approved, you'll need to pass the ASWB Clinical Exam. After passing:
- If taken in New Jersey, upload your unofficial passing score report to your online profile.
- If taken in another state, request an official ASWB score transfer.
Applying for Reciprocity
If you're an LCSW in another state, the process is slightly different:
- Complete the online application for LCSW.
- Upload a copy of your resume to your online profile.
- Your recent work experience will be reviewed in lieu of supervision hours.
- Send all third-party documents, including official transcripts and license verifications, to: DCA_Social_Work_No_Reply@dca.njoag.gov.
- Request an official ASWB score transfer or upload a letter detailing your licensure history if grandfathering provisions applied.
Important Notes
- Ensure that all job descriptions are official and on agency letterhead.
- For out-of-state licenses, primary source license verifications must be sent directly from the issuing Board to the New Jersey Board.
