Are you a social worker in New Jersey gearing up for your licensing exams? Whether you're aiming for the Masters Level (LSW) or the Clinical Level (LCSW), knowing the ins and outs of the process can make a world of difference. Here’s a simple and straightforward guide to help you navigate the licensing exams with ease.
When Are the Licensing Exams Given?
The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) administers the exams at Pearson VUE testing sites throughout New Jersey. You'll receive information on scheduling your exam in the pre-approval letter from the Board of Social Work Examiners (BSWE).
When Can I Take the Exam?
- Masters Level (LSW) Exam: You can take this exam after registering for your last semester of coursework in your Master's program.
- Clinical Level (LCSW) Exam: This exam is available after completing your 3,000 clinical experience hours. Note that you must receive prior approval from the BSWE before sitting for either exam.
Visit the BSWE website for information on the application process and to access pre-approval forms for the ASWB Masters or Clinical Level Examination.
How Can I Prepare for the Exams?
Preparation is key! The NASW-NJ Chapter offers a comprehensive licensure exam institute that includes:
- A full day of instruction
- A professionally published study guide
- A mobile app
- Practice questions
Additionally, ASWB offers its own study guide, and other organizations provide test prep resources as well.
If I Fail the Exam, May I Take It Again?
Yes, you can retake the exam. The ASWB requires a 90-day waiting period between attempts. The countdown begins the day after your test date. Fortunately, there is no limit to the number of times you can take the exam, but you must pay each time.
How Long Will the Exam Take?
You have four hours to complete the exam, which consists of 170 multiple-choice questions. Note that 20 of these questions are "pre-test" items and will not be scored. The exam is administered electronically.
How Soon After Taking the Master's Level Exam (LSW) Can I Take the Clinical Exam (LCSW)?
Starting January 1, 2021, you must have at least 2 years of clinical experience and complete your 3,000 supervised clinical hours before being approved to sit for the LCSW exam. You cannot apply for the LCSW exam before completing your clinical experience.
