Understanding New York's Occupational Therapy Licensure Requirements
For aspiring occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants in New York, understanding the licensure requirements is crucial. This guide outlines the general requirements, fees, and specific educational and examination criteria necessary for licensure in New York State.
General Requirements
In New York, the titles "occupational therapist" and "occupational therapy assistant" are protected and require licensure. To be licensed, candidates must:
- Be of good moral character.
- Be at least 21 years old for occupational therapists or 18 for occupational therapy assistants.
- Meet specific education and examination requirements.
Applicants must submit an Application for Licensure (Form 1) along with the appropriate fee to the Office of the Professions. The specific requirements are detailed in Title 8, Article 156 of New York's Education Law.
Fees
The fees associated with licensure are as follows:
- $294 for occupational therapists.
- $70 for a limited permit as an occupational therapist.
- $147 for occupational therapy assistants.
- $70 for a limited permit as an occupational therapy assistant.
Fees are subject to change and must be paid via credit card if applying online, or by check/money order if applying by mail. Refunds are available for those who withdraw their application.
Educational Requirements
To meet the educational requirements, candidates must have completed a program that is either New York State registered or accredited by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). For those educated outside the U.S., additional credential verification may be required.
Occupational therapists need a baccalaureate or entry-level master’s degree, or a post-baccalaureate certificate in occupational therapy. They must also have at least six months of supervised experience.
Occupational therapy assistants must complete a two-year associate degree program. Programs completed outside the U.S. must be verified for equivalency.
Examination Requirements
Occupational therapists must pass the NBCOT OTR examination, and occupational therapy assistants must pass the COTA examination. A passing score of 450 is required, and scores must be sent directly from NBCOT to the New York State Education Department.
Limited Permits
A limited permit allows individuals to practice under supervision while awaiting examination results. It is valid for one year and may be renewed once under certain conditions.
