Possible Uses of AI in Schools (and the Non-Negotiable Role of Humans)
AI can support K–12 systems in multiple ways, particularly by reducing time spent on repetitive tasks. When used appropriately, AI tools may help with:
- Administrative and organizational efficiency (e.g., drafting communications, summarizing documents, organizing information)
- Supplementing instruction when guided by professional judgment (e.g., generating practice questions, offering examples at varied reading levels)

However, the Ministry emphasizes that learning is relational. Empathy, encouragement, and nuanced understanding are not “features”—they are the foundation of effective education. Responsible Integration: From Selection to Decommissioning

Privacy Legislation and Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs): The Starting Line, Not the Finish Line
Privacy is one of the most consequential considerations in K–12 AI adoption. Under Section 69(5) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA), a public school district must conduct a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) when a project involves personal information, and explain how that information will be protected.
Because many AI tools process user inputs (which may include personal information), districts should assume that a PIA will likely be required when procuring a new AI tool.
Independent schools should also note that the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) limits the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information, and schools are encouraged to maintain privacy policies.
From a practical standpoint, privacy planning should clarify:
- What data is collected (and whether it includes student or staff personal information)
- Where data is stored and how long it is retained
- Who can access the data
- Whether data is used to train models (and how that is governed)
- What happens if there is a breach
Tailored Guidance by Role: Shared Responsibility, Different Lenses
While all categories matter, different roles naturally focus on different risks and outcomes. The Ministry highlights the importance of collaborative decision-making across:
- School boards (often focused on ethics, impacts, accessibility, compatibility, and privacy/security)
- District leaders (often spanning all seven categories, including teaching/learning and inclusion)
- School leaders (often centered on ethics, teaching/learning, and inclusive learning)
- Teachers (often focused on ethics, teaching/learning, and inclusion in day-to-day practice)
This division is useful because it prevents “single-owner adoption,” where a tool enters classrooms without adequate privacy review, accessibility validation, or instructional alignment.

1) Ethical Uses: What Should AI’s Role Be?
Ethical integration begins with clarity and transparency. Schools can strengthen ethical practice by:
- Establishing a clear, well-defined selection process
- Embedding AI literacy and ethical discussion into learning experiences
- Communicating transparently with parents and caregivers about how AI is used and why
- Confirming tools have been human-reviewed for bias and considering risks such as hallucinations and jailbreak susceptibility
- Ensuring informed consent when AI is used for functions like transcription

AI should be adopted to meet a specific need—not because it is new or popular. Considerations include:
- Is the tool designed for K–12, and does the vendor’s purpose align with educational outcomes?
- Will it reduce workload or unintentionally create more work through oversight and troubleshooting?
- Does the cost-benefit justify implementation compared to the current process?
- Is there a plan to stop using the tool quickly if it fails to meet needs?
- Are there safeguards for errors, inappropriate outputs, or malicious use?
3) Accessibility and Usability: Can Everyone Use It?
Equitable access requires planning for differences in ability, language, socioeconomic background, and technology familiarity. Schools should look for:
- Compliance with accessibility standards (visual, auditory, mobility, and language considerations)
- Clear documentation and training resources
- Intuitive interfaces that reduce training burden
- Accessible customer support that does not bottleneck through a single gatekeeper
- Community involvement to surface local needs and barriers
4) Integration and Compatibility: Will It Fit Today and Tomorrow?
A tool that does not integrate well becomes a hidden cost. Districts should verify:
